APEC ECONOMIC AND TECHNICAL COOPERATION ENCOURAGES PERUVIAN PROJECTS

• To date, APEC has approved more than 1 300 projects of various countries for a total of $86 million dollars
• Good practice in investment promotion is one of the Peruvian approved projects,  announced earlier at the 2nd Meeting of Senior Officials - SOM II

One of APEC pillars is the technical and economic cooperation, in addition to business facilitation and trade liberalization and investment. The aim of ECOTECH (as it is known by its acronym in English) is to provide training and cooperation to strengthen capacities in all APEC Members, and thus take advantage of global trade.

Peru's participation in APEC provides access to the cooperation that transfers experience, knowledge and information on trade issues, technological innovation, training of human resources, environment, anti-corruption and human security. Cooperative activities include seminars, training workshops and the conduction of studies and consultancies.

To date, APEC has approved over 1,300 projects amounting $86 million dollars, financed with APEC’s funds or by the Economies. 22 projects to be implemented during 2008 in Peru were presented, 21 of which were approved by the Budget and Administrative Committee of APEC. The projects’ themes are framed in the work priorities identified in the APEC agenda.

Good practice in investment promotion is one of the approved projects, which envisages a partnership between the Corporate Government and business units, to avoid the obstacles and bureaucratic barriers. The adoption of this project, which takes the example of companies such as Intel Corporation and Topy Top, was announced at the Second Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM II) held in Arequipa last May.

Other cooperation projects approved relate to the topics of standardization and of single-window initiatives; the provision for investment in transport and communications, chemical metrology, and digital invoicing, among others.
