APEC TELECOMMUNICATIONS WORKING GROUP MEETING RESULTS WILL BE PRESENTED

• Asia-Pacific Delegates discussed about the role of new technologies to manage disasters, cyber security and private virtual networks.

After six days of hard work, Security and Prosperity, Liberalization and Development groups of the Information and Communication Technologies of the APEC Telecommunications Group will hold a plenary session and inform on the results of the meetings and projects for the following years.

In the morning, Arnon Tubtiang, Thai Delegate and Chairman of the 38th Information and Telecommunications Technologies Working Group plenary sessions, will inform about the proposals and guidelines prepared during the week and about the main topics addressed. Luis Tsuboyama, Gender, SMEs and Telecommunications Director of APEC Secretariat in Singapore will also declare.

Some of the topics discussed were: regional economic integration through private virtual networks, competence and convergence policies, frameworks for the creation of policies and regulations, interconnection and consumption issues, capacity-building process in telecommunications trading standards and regulatory disciplines, as well as universal access to Wideband services.

Furthermore, specific topics were highlighted, such as the importance in the use of telecommunications to manage disasters, policies against malware, cyber security, cyberspace protection from terrorist use and attacks, universal access to Internet by 2010, the use of new technologies for health care and capacity-building in rural communities.
