APEC TELECOMMUNICATION EXPERTS PROMOTE AMPLE USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES WITHIN THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION

• 38° Telecommunications Working Group Meeting will be held from October 12 to 17 at the National Museum
• Peruvian Telecommunications achievements are shown in the facilitation of the entrance for new competitors in the market

From this Sunday, October 12, until Friday 17 the National Museum will be the venue for the 38° APEC Telecommunications and Information Technologies Working Group (TEL-WG). This meeting aims improving the telecommunications and information technologies infrastructure of Asia-Pacific region through the implementation of suitable cooperation strategies and policies for development. All of his within the transition context that has been happening for many years now: to pass from Asia-Pacific Information Infrastructure to a Information Society.

During this meeting, that will have the attendance of 150 Asia-Pacific region experts will discuss about the development of Telecommunications to Control Disasters, as well as the promotion of Awareness on Cybernetic Security. In the same manner, a Workshop on Best Practices will be held on the 16. The Plenary meeting of this group will be held on the 17.

TEL-WG has developed a progressive work in the following areas: liberalization of telecommunications market, development of a wide band, electronic government, e-commerce, models to promote a bigger use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), development of human skills, cybernetic security and reduction of the digital gap between developed and developing economies.

In Peru, important steps have been done to Foster services convergence and to facilitate the entrance proceeding of new competitors into the telecommunications market. Regarding regulations, the “Sole Concession” Act provides that operators willing to apply multiple services only require following a sole proceeding; the “Telecommunications Infrastructure Expansion” Act states a temporary regime to install and deploy the needed infrastructure for telecommunications services; as well as the implementation of biding processes to provide ground and mobile telephone services, among others.

The 38° Telecommunications and Information Technologies represent an opportunity to explore the most important challenges and priorities within the APEC Economies. It will also be a suitable occasion to analyze the studies on competence, convergence, universal access, cybernetic security and network infrastructure misuse policies.
