TRAINING IS A KEY ISSUE TO SMEs INNOVATION

• Experts from the United States said that Peru has a rapid and sustainable growth on Information Technology systems for SMEs training

Innovation involves creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit, but also research and a proper technical and academic support. Many APEC experts came to this conclusion during the Seminar on Innovation Management sponsored by Peru in the frame of SMEs meetings held in Chiclayo.

It is true that in Peru Information and Communication Technologies and the Software Industry is relatively small in comparison with other economies, but it is rapidly developing thanks to the support of current governmental policies.

Robert Kramer, Vice-president of Public Policies of CompTIA, International Technology Corporation present in more than 100 countries, explained about the importance of innovation in the SMEs process, and the challenge required to introduce an innovation culture not only in the developing economies but also in the developed ones.

On the other hand, Michael Mudd, Director of Public Policies for the Asia-Pacific region also from CompTIA, addressed the importance of governments as sponsors of technological policies. Likewise, he informed about the capabilities that may be needed in a 5-year term to innovate SMEs through several technological solutions. “Many are the capacities needed from now to 2013 to allow innovation to take-off. Although it is true that capacities, radio frequencies and advanced design will notably evolve, as experts we have provided some recommendations for the improvement and completion of technologies in APEC Member Economies in the future”, he said.

The expert Stephen Lau, President of the Electronic Data Systems (EDS) from Hong Kong, added that from the Asian experience and regarding the importance of training, it was advisable to combine two models. “The success of Asian companies, the most notable technology producers in the world, lies on the combination of two types of training: qualitative, in other words, focused in the education generation, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit and the quantitative, based on the concept of processes to create and efficiently run a company”, highlighted Stephen Lau, member of the United States delegation attending APEC SMEs meetings in Chiclayo.
