Lima, August 26, 2008APEC ECONOMIES SEEK SUSTAINABLE MINING DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL EQUITY• Peruvian proposal based on social and environmental approach is considered by Asia-Pacific Region Member Economies. • Singapore’s proposal to develop a radial identification system that guarantees safety and security in transportation is discussed in the Transportation Working Group.
Mining sustainable development in the APEC region must be based on an environmental protective strategy and the search for social equity within APEC Member Economies. This is the Peruvian proposal that has been considered in the Mining Task Force meetings, starting today in the National Museum.
Peruvian Vice-Minister of Mining, Mr. Felipe Isasi, informed that meeting agenda is focused on the development of mining in the region under a social and environmental approach that respects and cares for the environment, agriculture and cattle raising. Mining should also become an economic agent generating environmental assets and empowering local productive activities as well as cultural components.
He also said that Peru, as APEC Member Economy, is working towards mining modernization, by implementing formalization processes for artisan producers. This requires a responsible management of resources, reforestation work and other activities where citizen participation is promoted.
During the Mining Task Force Meetings, APEC delegates will discuss the working plan for the next two years and will prepare proposals to encourage economic growth as well. Among other topics, good practices on iron mining are also under assessment.
On the other hand, Ms. María Elena Bautista, Chair of Transportation Working Group and delegate of Philippines confirmed once more the need for a common work among all 21 APEC Member Economies, not only to share experiences but also to settle down proposals solving common issues and interests for APEC Members.
Air and port safety, technical assistance networks and safety policy standardization are some of the topics discussed on the meetings. One of the contents is the Commercial Recovery Program. This project, presented by Singapore, proposes a radial identification system that avoids commercial theft in sea and air transportation.
